Dr Michael J Souter MB ChB DA FRCA FNCS is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine and adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington. He is an Attending Physician in Anesthesiology, as well as Neurocritical Care, and Chief of Anesthesia Services at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle – which serves as the only Level 1 trauma center for the states of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in the UK in 1984, and after serving in the UK Royal Navy as a submariner, returned to Edinburgh to train in Anesthesiology & Critical Care, specializing in the care of brain injury. He was a Consultant and Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Neurological Sciences at the University of Glasgow, prior to recruitment to the University of Washington in 2001. He has diverse interests and roles which include an enduring interest in medical education – and was involved in the inception of the UCNS Neurocritical Care Board examination in 2006, chairing the Examinations Committee from 2014-2020. He serves on the Committee for Trauma and Emergency Preparedness, and the Committee of Ethics, of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He has represented the ASA on the Board of the Committee on Accreditation of EMS Programs since 2015.
